  • Prostheses designed for fixation of long bone fractures by encircling the shaft of the bone. These prostheses are typically metal alloy (e.g., stainless steel, cobalt-chromium) bands or sheets that are wrapped around and anchored to the shaft of the bone using screws; self-locking plastic (e.g., nylon) straps may also be used for bone cerclage. Bone cerclage prostheses are used mainly for spiral fractures and for fractures in which the bone is splintered or crushed (i.e., comminuted fractures); the prostheses may be surgically removed (i.e., temporary) or left in place (i.e., permanent) after healing; some synthetic cerclage prostheses are made of bioabsorbable materials.
