Implants designed for repair and/or partial replacement of the pericardium, a double membranous, cone-shaped fibroserous sac enclosing the heart and the roots of the great blood vessels. These implants are typically patches of biologic or synthetic grafts, available in a variety of shapes and sizes according to the intended site of implantation. Biological implants are frequently xenograft patches made of glutaraldehyde-fixed (patches are also available using other fixing techniques) bovine pericardium; synthetic implants are also available.
