Occlusion plugs designed to be inserted in the small drainage ducts in the corners of the eyes (lacrimal punctum) that connect the eye to the nose for temporary or permanent occlusion. These plugs are usually made of silicone or another biocompatible inert material; they are available in different sizes. Some occlusion plugs are intended for temporary use and dissolve upon contact with the punctum; others are permanent and do no dissolve, but can be removed if necessary. Lacrimal punctum occlusion plugs are intended to decrease or slow tear drainage; they are used mainly to treat some types of the condition generically known as \'dry eye.\'
