Electric receptacles designed with a latching mechanism to prevent unintentional removal of an inserted plug. These receptacles commonly have slots or holes, or a combination of the two into which devices are plugged; the slots or holes have metal contacts that are connected to electrical wiring. Plugs are inserted into the receptacles, then twisted in one direction and locked up into place by the prongs. This insures that the plugs are not accidentally removed from the receptacle. Locking electric plugs are used mainly in hospitals and healthcare facilities to connect an appliance to a power supply where increased protection against accidental disconnection is required.
