-
Instruments used to maintain vaginal exposure by separating the edges of the vagina and holding back the tissue.
-
Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the edges of surgical incisions around the vagina, providing access to the cervix and vagina during gynecologic and/or obstetric procedures. Vaginal retractors usually consist of large, handheld manual instruments with two smooth large and curved rounded blades at the distal end and two scissors-like handles with a ratchet that permit self-retention. Vaginal retractors consisting of a metallic ring holding three right-angled instruments with appropriate blades are also available; they are used in surgical and obstetric ante- and post-partum procedures. Dedicated vagina retractors, usually with heavy (weighted) right angled blades and light handles are used for hysterectomy; other dedicated retractors intended to expand the natural vagina are usually classified as vaginal specula.
