Electronically powered units designed to remove adherent deposits, such as plaque and calculus, from teeth and periodontal pockets by applying ultrasonic oscillations. These units consist of a generator and a handpiece. The generator provides a high-frequency electrical current that the handpiece converts to 18,000 to 50,000 vibrations per second oscillations. The units can also provide fluid irrigation to cool the handpiece and wash away debris. Ultrasonic dental scaling units use either magnetostrictive or piezoelectric technology. These units can be used to remove dental cement.
