Systems designed to replicate the motions and beam-positioning ability of specific radiotherapy units (e.g., cobalt units, linear accelerators). These systems perform radiotherapy simulation and establish the area to be treated using either a radiographic/fluoroscopic device with imaging capabilities or a computed tomography scanner. Radiotherapy simulation systems are used in radiotherapy planning to define the region of the actual tumor and the surrounding tissues that are considered to be at risk (i.e., the tumor volume) and to develop a treatment technique to deliver a homogeneous dose of radiation to the tumor while minimizing the dose to surrounding normal tissue.
