Devices designed to apply traction forces by means of harnesses attached to a particular site of the patient anatomy, such as the cervical or lumbar vertebrae, pelvis, or extremities. These devices typically consist of several specialized harnesses, a combination of pulleys and cords, and (typically) either a set of weights or a motor with a control unit as the source of the traction forces. The use of weights provides only one mode of operation (i.e., static or continuous mode), while the use of motors and appropriate control devices permits the application of traction forces in several modes (e.g., static, intermittent, progressive/regressive, cyclic). Adjustable spreader bars vary the angle at which the cord applies traction. Traction units are used in orthopedic and/or physical therapy procedures, including fracture treatment and widening of the intervertebral spaces in the spine.
