Transducers designed to convert mechanical forces into electrical signals with values that vary according to the intensity of the force. These transducers typically consist of strain gauges that convert physical deformation into an electrical signal that is processed by an electronic unit and displayed, recorded, and/or monitored in force units (e.g., lbs, kg). Force transducers, frequently known as load cells, are used in clinical applications as components of devices such as physiologic analyzers to measure muscle forces, scales to measure weight, and some laboratory equipment; they are also used in research applications.
