Condoms intended to be inserted in a person\'s vagina before engaging in coitus to provide a physical barrier to conception and/or transmission of sexually transmitted infections. Vaginal internal condoms are designed to prevent sperm from gaining access to the female reproductive tract by providing a physical barrier between the penis and the vagina in order to prevent conception. They can also be used to provide protection against sexually transmitted infections by preventing microorganisms from being transmitted from one partner to another during intercourse. Vaginal internal condoms are sheaths with one closed end (placed against the cervix) and one open end that stays outside of the vagina; each end has an encased flexible polyurethane ring that help keeps the condom in place. They are usually approximately 15 centimeters in length and 7 centimeters in width. Vaginal internal condoms are made of seamless polyurethane, nitrile, latex, or molded silicone; they are soft, thin, and transparent, and some come pre-lubricated or lubrication can be added, as needed; vaginal internal condoms can also be used with spermicides. Some condoms include a medical-grade sponge at the closed end that can help with insertion and to help hold the condom in place during use.
