Compressed-air monitors designed to measure and display the temperature at which water vapor condenses (dew point); some may also monitor the temperature at which water vapor condenses to form ice or frost (frost point) and the relative humidity. These monitors consist of either a dew (water vapor) sensor that detects changes in electrical device characteristics (e.g., capacitance, voltage) with moisture or a direct dew-point sensor (e.g., chilled mirror), a temperature sensor, and an electronic unit, including a display. Some monitors also include audible and/or visual alarms activated at prefixed values. Dew-point monitors are used to avoid condensation in the delivery system, preventing the formation of acid components (e.g., carbonic acid) that corrode the parts of the air/gas system and could affect devices that use those gases.
