A family of cancer/testis antigen proteins encoded by genes located on the short arm of the X chromosome within Xp11.22-Xp11.23. The initial members of this family were identified as fusion partners with either SS18 protein or SS18L protein in synovial sarcoma. SSX proteins play a role in the modulation of gene transcription and contain an N-terminal Krueppel-associated box (KRAB) domain and a C-terminal SSX repression domain (SSXRD).
