A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram-negative rod shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This E. coli serogroup may or may not be motile and contains both Shiga-toxin producing and nonproducing stains of bacteria. E. coli O157 was isolated from livestock and is a food borne pathogen that causes diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans.
