Gold vapor lasers that generate and deliver their energy to the surface of previously photosensitized tissues. The combined effect of light, sensitizers, and tissue oxygen destroy tissue by a phototoxic effect (photodynamic therapy). These lasers usually consist of gold vapor laser generator and microlens or isotropic (spherical or cylindrical) applicators adapted to the absorption of the sensitizer. Photodynamic therapy gold vapor lasers are used to ablate tissue (e.g., malignant tumors) without a significant thermal effect.
