  • Sterile talc intended for infusion in the pleura to cause the membranes around the lungs to stick together (i.e., pleurodesis), preventing the buildup of fluid in the space between the pleural membranes . This sterile talc consist of large particle hydrated magnesium silicate (i.e., talc), typically with a mean particle size of 25 micrometer and a small percentage of particles with size less than 5 micrometer. Large size particles are used to lessen the occurrence of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after talc pleurodesis. A few grams of the sterile talc are infused (e.g., using an atomizer) to treat pneumothorax or malignant pleural effusions.
