Lower-limb orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the knee and ankle joints and the foot, providing controlled motion, complete immobilization, and/or support. Knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFO) usually consist of an ankle foot orthosis with the addition of metal uprights, and thigh straps. Functional KAFOs usually include articulated orthotic knee joints. Also available are KAFO orthoses intended for therapy in patients with debilitated quadriceps. These help knee stability and limit the weight bearing of the thigh, leg, and foot. Therapeutic orthoses intended for pediatric therapy are available. Functional (i.e., gait) KAFOs are also available.
