  • Lower limb prostheses designed for partial functional (e.g., rotation, flexion) replacement of a hip amputated at the hip articulation (i.e., removing the femur completely but keeping the pelvis intact). These prostheses typically consist of external or partially implantable devices with socket, foot, ankle, knee, and tubular components resembling the leg and thigh; and a hip component including a mechanism that provides rotational and flexion movements and locking positions at the distal end and that can be anchored directly to the socket lamination plate, typically using a double-hinged plate at the hip articulation point. Disarticulation hip prostheses are available in a great variety of configurations and sizes; they are typically used as lower limb prostheses in patients who suffered amputations due to traumatic accidents or, less frequently, in patients who have congenital abnormalities or illness.
