Orthodontic retainers, that cannot be easily removed by the patient, designed to hold teeth in place during the period of functional adaptation while surrounding gingival tissue (i.e., gums) and bone adjust to a new position following corrective orthodontic treatment. These retainers typically consist of metallic wires attached to the lower incisors; they are intended to prevent reversal of the substantial modifications in tooth position (e.g., great modifications in bite) gained by orthopedic procedures.
