  • Ophthalmic implants designed to repair the floor of the bony cavity that contains the eyeball and its associated muscles, vessels, and nerves (i.e., the orbital floor). These implants may consist of flexible mesh made of either non-absorbable alloplastics (e.g., polyglactin, silastics), biologically absorbable materials (e.g., polyglicolic acid), or metallic (e.g., titanium); some consist of pre-punched solid alloplastics (e.g., expanded polytetrafluoroethylene also known as e-PTFE) available in several shapes (e.g., triangular, round, square) and sizes. Orbital floor implants are mainly used to treat orbital fractures (e.g., blow-out fractures); they are also used to correct other traumatic or non-traumatic volume deficiency in the orbital floor.
