  • Photometers in which the sample is aspirated into a flame, and the thermally excited atoms emit light of characteristic wavelengths. The intensity of the light emitted at one of these wavelengths is a measure of the amount of the element present. These instruments consist of a burner, a nebulizer, a narrow band-pass monochromator, and a detector system. Flame photometers are used for determining some metal ions, usually sodium, potassium, and lithium, in body fluids.
