Tabletop centrifuges in which maximum velocity is usually about 6,000 rpm (sometimes up to 10,000 rpm). These centrifuges are used primarily to compact or collect small amounts of substances that sediment rapidly (e.g., red blood cells); they cannot reach sufficient speed to adequately separate ultrasmall particles (e.g., viruses) or macromolecules or to perform density gradient centrifugation.
