Systems that produce a mono-layer sample of the Papanicolaou smear using an automatic processor. These systems standardize the sample preparation technique and reduce the number of compromised cervical samples due to blood, mucus, and inflammation, as well as errors due to the process of transferring the sample to a slide. The samples are obtained using a liquid collection method in which the sampling instrument is rinsed in a collection vial that is sent to the clinical laboratory for processing.
