Thermometers designed to measure temperature using liquid crystal (typically esters of cholesterol) sensors sealed in a plastic strip. The strips are placed on an object; the heat of the object alters the molecular structure of the liquid crystals reversibly and in a reproducible way as a function of the temperature. Liquid crystal thermometers are used clinically to measure the temperature on the skin and/or on the surface of laboratory specimen containers.
