Nasal cannulae designed for delivery of oxygen into the nasal cavities. These cannulae typically consist of a plastic tube 6 mm (1/4 inch) in diameter that includes two prongs that project about 1 cm into the nose on both sides. Oxygen-supply nasal cannulae are used for short-term oxygen administration (e.g., in the immediate postoperative period); they are also used for long-term oxygen therapy in patients with chronic oxygen-dependent respiratory failure (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial fibrosis, diffusion defect).
