Tubes covered with supporting media that are used to separate an ionic mixture of solutes into its components by the differences in migration rate when an electric field is applied (electrophoresis). These columns are usually made of glass or plastic (e.g., acrylic) tubes; they are usually mounted vertically, with both ends placed into buffer wells that make the electrical connection between the columns and the electrodes. Typically, several columns are run simultaneously in an electrophoretic system.
