Scanning systems that use laser beams at one or more frequencies to generate an image of tissue in a transverse plane of the body. The light detected after passing across the tissue is analyzed to determine the absorption and changes in speed, resulting in optical slices that are reconstructed to form a continuous image that can be viewed on a video display terminal. These systems can be used in diagnostic procedures to differentiate tissues according their optical properties (e.g., measurements of tissue, detection of cancerous tissue).
