Cardiac catheters designed for mapping the three-dimensional anatomy of the heart, acquiring electrophysiologic data at any given mapped point; they are also used to perform cardiac ablation procedures. Mapping/ablation cardiac catheters typically consist of a 7 or 8 French catheter with tip and/or ring electrodes; the catheters also include some means (e.g., induction coils activated by external magnetic fields) that permit their external localization and navigation during the procedure. Mapping/ablation cardiac catheters are components of stereotactic systems used for mapping heart structures through accurate localization of critical cardiac structures (e.g., His bundle, atrioventricular node) and subsequent ablation of cardiac tissue by delivering of ablation energy (e.g., radio frequency) through the electrodes.
