Intrauterine catheters designed for direct measurement of the pressure generated by the muscular coat of the uterus (myometrium). These catheters usually include a micropressure transducer located at their distal tip; some open-end, fluid-filled pressure catheters attached to an external strain gauge transducer are still in use. Manometric intrauterine catheters provide diagnostic information to assess the pressure generated by the myometrium and in following the condition of the fetus during labor and delivery; they permit evaluation of uterine contraction frequency, duration, and amplitude and of the resting uterine tonus.
