Nasogastric catheters designed for both injection of bleeding lesions in and irrigation of the upper gastrointestinal tract. These catheters consist of a double-lumen tube, typically 160 cm in length and 2.3 to 2.7 mm in diameter. One lumen contains a retractable needle with several-millimeter extrusion capability; irrigation is delivered via a second lumen. Injection/irrigation nasogastric catheters are used for administration of sclerosing solutions (e.g., polidocanol) and vasoconstrictors (e.g., adrenaline) in the treatment of esophageal varices and peptic ulcers.
