Hyperthermia microwave therapy systems used for heating of deep-seated tumors. These systems consist of a microwave generator, interstitial or intracavitary applicators including antennas, a temperature sensor, and a feedback system for microwave power control; interstitial hyperthermia systems are capable of applying energy inside the tumors, making possible a more uniform heating than with external applicators. Conventional applicators are used for small tumors, while balloon applicators (catheters) make it possible to treat larger tumors. Interstitial hyperthermia systems are commonly used in combination with localized radiation therapy (thermobrachytherapy).
