Swabs that include a sterile wad (e.g., rayon, calcium alginate, polyurethane foam) suited for good specimen recovery that is firmly attached to one end of a plastic or wooden stick; they are combined with a tube (e.g., polypropylene) to minimize sample contamination and to facilitate protected transportation. In some models, the swab is secured in the tube cap. Specimen collection/transportation swabs are used to collect samples (e.g., nose, throat, vagina specimens) for laboratory microbiological examination and/or culture.
