  • Blood lancets that incorporate one or more safety features intended to prevent needlesticks and/or cross-contamination. The needle/blade of protective lancets is typically withdrawn within a plastic housing prior to use, and the lancets incorporate a mechanism to extend the blade upon device activation. Depending on their design, protective lancets may be activated by pushing a button on the lancet or by pressing the lancet against the patient\'s skin (i.e., pressure-activated lancets). Protective lancets may be designed to extend the needle to a fixed depth (typically between 0.8 and 3 mm); some protective lancets incorporate the ability for the user to adjust the needle/blade penetration depth. After activation, protective lancets may withdraw the needle/blade back into the body of the device and lock the firing mechanism, preventing the lancet from being reused.
