  • Devices used to produce high-resolution multiformat films directly from image data acquired during diagnostic radiology procedures (e.g., computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, digital radiography, digital photospot fluoroscopy), using dry-processing imaging. Typically, dry-processing imagers are used during a procedure that does not require a ribbon (i.e., thermal recording process). The imagers include a thermal head, heat-responsive microcapsules filled with dye precursors, and a developer; when heat is applied, the developer passes through the microcapsule walls and reacts with the dye precursor to form a dye that creates an image on film or paper. Dry-processing imagers allow diagnoses to be made from a hard copy rather than from an electronic image on a monitor screen. They are not intended to digitize film images.
