Physiologic monitors designed for continuous measurement and display of the electrical potential generated by muscle fibers that are intended to assess the adequacy of the neuromuscular system. These monitors typically consist of a main computerized electronic unit that processes and displays the information; a display; and detachable electrodes (e.g., cups, needles) appropriate to acquire the specific neuromuscular electrical potentials. Electromyographic neurological monitors are intended to assess the electric potentials from a single muscle (e.g., extraocular, facial, laryngeal, lingual) or from several muscles simultaneously. They are used to assess patients during daily activities, in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, and during surgical procedures (e.g., cranial, spinal, vascular) or perioperatively. Bedside, intraoperative, and telemetric monitors are available.
