Monitors designed primarily for continuous or quasi-continuous real-time measuring and display of numerical data and/or waveforms of one or more physiologic (e.g., respiration, blood pressure, bioelectric signals) and/or other conditions that directly affect people\'s health. Some monitors can also display the parameters of critical care devices (e.g., administered anesthetic gases, airway pressure, fluid absorption) utilized during patient treatment. These devices usually consist of a tabletop electronic unit that includes controls and a display showing the characteristics of the event under observation; the monitor may be connected to the line and/or powered by internal batteries. The main unit may also include appropriate attached probes and sensors that make possible sequential and/or simultaneous measurements of the parameters. The monitors may also record the parameters of the event and alarm when one or more of the parameters under observation reach a value outside from a pre-established range. Physiologic monitors are mainly intended for continuous or periodic observation and checking of the clinical status of patients. Physiologic monitors that are hard-wired to the patient at the bedside, use wireless telemetric transmission of data, and/or intended for intraoperative conditions, for personal self-control, and/or for other particular conditions are available.
