Freshwater, annelid worms of the family hirudinidae (e.g., Hirudo medicinalis, Macrobdella decora) that secrete in their saliva compounds with anti-coagulant properties (e.g., hirudin). Medical leeches may be used to promote localized bleeding to address venous congestion, typically occurring as a consequence of traumatic injury or reconstructive surgical procedures. Live leeches are placed on the skin overlying the area of venous congestion, and their feeding promotes circulation within the underlying tissue.
