?:definition
  • Heart prostheses designed for implantation in the patient\'s chest that include a percutaneous connection to an external power source that supplies the driving power, such as a pneumatic machine or electric battery. These devices typically consist of an implantable metallic and plastic mechanism that includes one or more pumps that work as artificial ventricles pushing the blood from the inlet valve to the outlet valve and then trough the circulatory system; an electrical or pneumatic external power source is connected to the implanted pumps through electrical wires or pneumatic drivelines entering the left part of the patient\'s chest. Percutaneously powered heart prostheses include a battery and/or a pneumatic console permanently attached to the patient for power supply as well as for pumping rate and pressure control of the implanted heart prosthesis. These prostheses are mainly used as a temporary solution (\'bridge\') until transplantation.
