  • Microspheres that are radio or fluorescent labeled to facilitate their detection; they are typically 10 to 20 microns in diameter. These microspheres are injected into the arteries that supply blood to a specific organ or tissue; the regional blood flow (i.e., regional perfusion) is determined by measuring the quantity of microspheres that reach the small vessels, using either scintigraphy techniques for radio-labeled microspheres or other appropriate detection methods for fluorescent-labeled microspheres (e.g., histologic methods).
