?:definition
  • Video systems designed to transmit fixed (i.e., still) images through narrow-band communication systems using slow-scan techniques. These systems typically consist of a standard television camera with its output signal connected to a device that slows the stream of images to match and audio circuit capacity (i.e., a scan converter), resulting in a picture without motion (I.e., still picture). The signal is transmitted to a remote location through a narrow-band channel (e.g., an ordinary telephone line), where it is reconverted using a second scan converter and displayed in a standard television monitor. Still-image television systems are used in remote places to get fast and adequate evaluations of images, such as radiographies and computed tomography scans; they are also used for information exchange in teleconferences.
