Handheld oscillatory positive expiratory pressure units consisting of a counterweighted lever and a magnet. The exhaled air passes through the cone which is intermittently occluded by a plug attached to the lever, producing airflow oscillations. A knob located at the distal end of the device adjusts the distance between the magnet and counterweighted plug, thereby adjusting the frequency, amplitude, and mean positive expiratory pressure (PEP). These units are available in two models, intended for patients with an expiratory flow capacity smaller or greater than 15 liter/minute respectively. Magnetic valve devices are intended to shear mucus from the airway wall by oscillatory forces, prevention of early airway closure by stabilization of the airways with PEP, and to aid in mucus mobilization and expectoration. They are intended for use in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
