Multichannel electrocardiographs (ECGs) designed for recording the variations of the electric potential caused by the electrical activity of the heart muscle. These variations are usually detected at the body surface from two or more leads simultaneously by averaging multiple cycles of the signal to reduce noise but which cannot perform any interpretation of the ECG. These instruments include a computerized unit that can process and print the average of the ECG signals and the ECG waveforms. Noninterpretive multichannel ECGs are used to diagnose cardiac abnormalities, determine the response to drug therapy, and reveal trends or changes in the heart function. Noninterpretive signal-averaging ECGs are not intended for a real-time assessment of the electrocardiogram or other cardiac conditions.
