Ophthalmic measuring instruments designed for determining aberration by measuring the direction of light rays reflected from the eye and reconstructing the wavefront. Instruments that use several different technologies are available. An instrument based on the Hartmann-Shack principle consists of a light source (most often a laser); a wavefront sensor, made of an array of micro-lenses (known as lenslets) that spilt the wavefront into a number of light spots to be focused on a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera; computer data processing capabilities and a display for the result. Other aberrometers use the ray tracing principle and consist of a light source (most often a laser), a lens system, an x-y scanner, a beam splitter, and a photodetector to project a series of beam of light into the eye sequentially and to capture the retinal images of the light. Aberrometers are mainly used to plan laser refractive surgery and for lens fitting.
