  • Surgical burs designed for excavation, incision, or removal of bone and hard tissue during microsurgical procedures of the spine performed under microscope visualization (i.e., microsurgery). These burs typically consist of a small shank made of steel or tungsten carbide with a well-differentiated working head in a variety of sizes and shapes (e.g., cylinder, conical) on the distal end; a tapered, notched, or elongated proximal end to fit into a very small surgical rotary device; and a neck that connects the shank to the working part. Dedicated spinal microsurgical burs are available for a variety of procedures, including microlumbar discectomy; they are usually intended for reuse after sterilization, but disposable (single use) devices are available.
