  • Bougies designed to be inserted through the working channel of a rigid or flexible bronchoscope and used to dilate the bronchi. These manual, handheld devices are typically hollow metal or plastic cylinders with a tapered working end. Bronchial bougies are used to produce stricture dilation to improve ventilation and prevent atelectasis and pneumonia; they are also used prior to stent implantation. Dedicated bronchoscopy dilators with an inflatable balloon are also used for bronchial stricture dilatation.
