  • Burs designed to be held and rotated by a surgical handpiece (manual, electrical, or pneumatic) to excavate soft and hard tissue during surgical procedures. These burs typically consist of a shank made of steel or tungsten carbide with a well-differentiated working head in a variety of sizes and shapes (e.g., round, cylinder, inverted cone, pear) on the distal end; a tapered, notched, or elongated proximal end to fit into the rotary device; and a neck that connects the shank to the working part. Dedicated surgical burs are available for many different types of procedures, including orthopedic, middle-ear, nasal, oral, ophthalmic, podiatric and plastic surgery. They are usually intended for reuse after sterilization, but disposable (single use) surgical burs are also available.
