Washers designed for the automatic or semiautomatic removal of dirt and/or stains (i.e., washing) from noncritical (ancillary) devices and small receptacles such as bedpans. These washers typically include a stainless steel washing compartment into which the utensils are directly loaded or placed in appropriate holders. Bedpan/utensil washers usually perform a cycle of operations that typically include water prewash, enzyme treatment, detergent wash, and heated rinse. Bedpan/ancillary utensil washers are available in freestanding and wall-recessed configurations and typically used in central supply departments of healthcare facilities. Utensil washers that mechanically remove biological contaminants by scrubbing or using water jets are considered washer/decontamination units.
