HLA-B wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 6p21.3 and is approximately 3 kb in length. This allele, which encodes HLA class I histocompatibility antigen, B-7 alpha chain protein, plays a role in peptide presentation by the immune system. Certain allelic variants of the HLA-B gene are associated with susceptibility to ankylosing spondylitis, carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome and allopurinol-induced severe cutaneous adverse reaction.
