Life-threatening anemia associated with a high risk of infection or bleeding. Historically defined as bone marrow (BM) cellularity <25% (or <50% if <30% of BM is hematopoietic cells), and two or more of the following: absolute neutrophil count of <500; platelet count of <20,000; or a corrected reticulocyte count of <1%. Absence of cytogenetic abnormalities associated with myelodysplastic syndrome or malignancy must be ruled out prior to diagnosis.
