Document scanners designed to provide bar-code data-entry capabilities to handheld computers (i.e., portable digital assistants [PDAs]). These scanners typically consist of a card and LED (light-emitting diode) sources that plug into the card slot of a handheld computer, providing automatic decoding of many common bar-code symbol systems, such as UPC (Universal Product Code) and EAN (European Article Number). Handheld computer bar-code document scanners are used to perform tasks that require extensive mobile data collection from bar-coded labels or tags, such as device inventories, and also for manipulation of laboratory sample data.
