Blood pheresis sets in which all the components are preattached as a closed system. These devices typically include a set of tubing, needles, collection bags, and saline solutions and anticoagulants; some closed sets have sterile-barrier filters that permit users to provide their own intravenous and anticoagulant solutions. Closed blood pheresis sets are used to extend storage life of the products (e.g., five days for platelets). They are used in apheresis units.
